Canada as a place has always featured high in the list of the immigrants. This is something which has stayed with Canada from many years as one of the feathers in its cap to be proud of. To cater to this high inflow of migrants, the Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants (CSIC) was set up by the government in 2003 so as to help those wanting to immigrate to Canada. This was established primarily with the aim of regulating and monitoring the immigration consultants needed by the potential immigrants at the time of immigration. However of late, there have been cases reported of its inefficiency thus resulting in the replacement of the body.
Failure of CSIC
The Canadian government's effort in the light of the setting up of CSIC has turned out to be futile, with it not being able to satisfy the people. With innumerable complaints ranging from high membership fees; unethical practices carried out by the consultants to decisions made by it lacking basic prudence, all the facets of the body has been brought to criticism. Moreover all these complaints being recognized and supported by the Standing Committee has further strengthened the authenticity of these issues thus making the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) to think in the same light about the Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants.
New regulatory body
On the basis of the analysis carried out by the Standing Committee, regarding the dismal performance of CSIC, Citizenship and Immigration Canada decided to formulate a new regulatory body. This step was taken so as to preserve the integrity and restore the faith of the common people on the immigration system of Canada. In this context a public selection process was started in June 2010 inviting the applications of all those who were inclined to take over the responsibility of the governance of the immigration consultants. Post to a thorough examination of all the submissions and evaluation of the credibility of all the organizations by the selection committee, the report was submitted to the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism proposing ICCRC as the one best suited for this purpose.
Strategies proposed by ICCRC
The Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC) is the body which has been proposed as the replacement to the CSIC as announced by the Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney on the 18th of March 2011 in Toronto. Keeping all the loopholes of the past in consideration, the ICCRC has promised of an ameliorated immigration consulting industry. Various innovative strategies have been suggested by it such as development of a complaint cell; introduction of public awareness campaigns and even the much talked about ‘helpline ‘for the parliamentary members to enhance factors like accountability, competence and quality consultation.
Benefits of the new body
The promises made by ICCRC in their submission, if are converted into practicality along with a strong management and strict control over the immigration consultants would eventually lead to the fulfillment of the purpose for which it has been chosen. Fake consultants, fraudulent applications and crime groups are the problems which will be uprooted from these measures. Not only will it benefit the government but will bring back the faith of the people on the Canadian immigration system as well as on the government.
